As a freelance photographer my assignments vary. I’ve photographed from food to people and I must confess I love shooting people (yes I know how it sounds 🙂 ). For my corporate clients I’ve covered several events, some of which involve sporting activities and I wanted to share a few of my favourite sport shots.

It all started  with coverage of the 2011 Globe Covenant Track Meet. All I had entering this assignment was theory; shooting at at 1/500th of sec or higher will freeze action.

Over the years I’ve found myself asking a series of questions during sporting events…

  1. Where is the best location to photograph?
  2. What’s the best angle?
  3. Who am I focusing on?
  4. What lens should I use?
  5. What story am I telling?

These questions force me to keep thinking of ways to produce unique photos from each assignment. Especially when they are annual events. The truth is that I’ll capture some of the same standard shots I did from previous events but because of these questions I’m creating new shots – it ultimately boils down to one big question “What can I do different than what I’ve done before?”

I’m grateful to the client who gave me my first sporting event to cover and appreciate those who give me a chance to do something different with each event I cover.
