Most people know me for headshots, professional portraits, and personal milestone sessions like birthdays, anniversaries, and graduations. But behind the scenes, I have been quietly building a catalog of authentic Jamaican stock photography that reflects the real spirit of our island; from Jamaican beef patties to Jamaican Easter bun and cheese.
Why I Started Creating Jamaican Stock Photos
Back when I worked as a graphic designer, I often struggled to find high-quality Jamaican images that felt true to our culture. Too often, I came across generic beach scenes or visuals that leaned into stereotypes. Even worse, many photos misrepresented what life in Jamaica looks and feels like.
That frustration sparked a mission. I wanted to create stock images that told the story of Jamaica from a Jamaican perspective, mine.
From Rejection to Representation
My first submission was rejected. I did not let that stop me, though. The first image that was accepted was uploaded to iStockPhoto in November 2007. Since then, my catalog has grown and now appears on AdobeStock, Unsplash, DepositPhotos, DreamsTime, and other platforms.
A Creative Challenge: Telling Stories Without People
One creative challenge I have set for myself is to shoot without people in the frame. This is partly due to copyright and licensing considerations. It also pushes me to be more creative, telling stories through objects, lighting, colours, and angles. My goal is to capture the culture and spirit of the island without relying on faces.
What Is Missing from the Jamaican Visual Story?
Between commissions, I keep a running list of ideas to explore. But I also want to hear from you. What kinds of Jamaican images would you love to see on stock photo websites? What feels underrepresented or missing from the visual narrative?
Your suggestions could help shape the next chapter of this journey.
